35-year-old Mom defends her child after her sister stole her name for her own twins: 'The 3 of them practically share a name'

Unless you get really creative with your naming choices, there are going to be other people in the world with the same name as your baby. 

But what if the people with the same name are… your own niece and nephew?

  • AITA for still using the baby name I told my sister I was going to use, despite her using a variation of it first?

    I (35F) had my first daughter in September. While I was pre_ ant my sister (38F) was also pre ant with a boy. In reality she was pre ant with twins, a boy and a girl, but thought it would be fun if it was a surprise for everyone.

  • pre ancy this was the name I planned to use. I even had stuff made with the name! She ensures everyone knows her babies we're born first.

  • Have you ever wanted to name your kids the same name that your sibling also wants to name their kid? It's surprisingly common, it would seem. It makes sense — maybe you both loved Grandma's name, and want to keep it in the family. Or perhaps you both loved the same book or TV show characters growing up, and now you're taking inspiration from your favorite characters. For whatever reason, this is something that siblings frequently disagree on. 

    But this family has seemingly found a workaround. They seem to have named their kids 3 separate names, all stemming from one original name. Why isn't that good enough for this sister?

    Even though it's not nearly as common as it used to be in the US, there was a time where tons of people were all named like, Jim or Peter or Timothy, and everyone made due. You create nicknames, or you use your last initial, or your friends create a nickname for you that you despise and that they find too hilarious to stop using. It all works out in the end!

    She thought she got away with something, not guessing that her own sibling would carry on with the original plan. 

  • Jazzy404404 Why would you change the name? You need to tell your sister that she knew what you were naming your daughter, and she chose those names anyway. This is the last time you want to hear about it, and you won't be changing the name. She needs to get over it.

    Broken-Ice-Cube NTA I'm confused how Cole, lettie and colette are too similar of names for cousins to have. Honest unless you're saying both her kids. names together without the and in between you could miss the fact they cole-lettie

    These are all very different names, and it's so sweet that they're all a version of the Grandmom's name. Like, why are they bickering over this when they've done a perfectly good job at naming their kids? The name stays in the family, honors a family member, and they're all perfectly normal. Cole and colette aren't even direct siblings! 

    Let's hope that the sisters can overcome their differences here, because there's just not too much to worry about in the grand scheme of life.
